Fall Pump-outs Eased for Some Dairy Farmers

December 6, 2006 ---- Fall has turned to winter and, in most areas of the U.S., dairy farmers have completed the oftentimes laborious task of pumping out their lagoons.  But users of Pro-Act Microbial had a different experience.

Typically, the fall pump-out requires agitating the solids at the bottom in order to remove them.  This puts wear and tear on machinery and costs money in fuel and time.  But dairies using Pro-Act’s microbial mix find that the microbes have gone to work on those solids at the bottom, making them looser and easier to remove.

“Even at the bottom of the lagoon, I end up with 97% liquid,” states Tom Wagner of Wagner Dairy in Middleton, Wisconsin.

In a Pro-Act treated lagoon, different kinds of bacteria work together to liquefy the manure solids and reduce the sludge on the bottom.  Customers like Mr. Wagner find they do not have to agitate at all when pumping.

Pro-Act’s simple system allows farmers to save money at pumping time and beyond.

“We were running two five-horsepower agitators,” explains Roy Beardsleee of Lottahill Farms Dairy in Troy, Pennsylvania.   “Now we’re running two 1-horsepower blowers.  This made a difference in our electric bill of about $250 month.”

Saving time, money and aggravation when pumping is one of the many benefits dairy farmers have when using Pro-Act Microbial to treat their manure.
